Professor Karypis has been selected as a recipient of the Distinguished McKnight University Professorship. This honor recognizes outstanding faculty members who have recently achieved full professor status. More.

Professors George Karypis, Joseph Konstan, John Riedl (posthumous), and former University of Minnesota Ph.D. student Badrul Sarwar, a 2001 Ph.D. graduate and current LinkedIn scientist, will receive the prestigious award for their paper entitled “Item-based collaborative filtering recommendation algorithms,” which was presented at the International World Wide Web Conference in 2001. The research is now regarded as the pioneering scholarly reference for recommender systems. More on Karypis

Added 3/10/2016 — Professor Roumeliotis, has been named an IEEE Fellow. He is being recognized for his contributions to visual-inertial navigation and cooperative localization. In particular, his research on spacecraft navigation for NASA using cameras and inertial sensors has recently found numerous applications, such as virtual reality and indoor wayfinding on cell phones, tablets, wearables, and robots. Added 12/17/2015 — The inaugural Russell J. Penrose Excellence in Teaching Award has been confered on Professor Jarvis Haupt. The award recognizes his genuine interest and excellent performance in teaching undergraduate and graduate students, and is based on strong student and peer evaluations, and quality of course materials. Congratulations and thank you for your dedication to teaching.

Added 12/17/2015 — Congratulations to Professor Sairaj Dhople for being awarded the Faculty Early Career Development Award from the National Science Foundation. Added 11/2/2015 — A University of Minnesota team led by Prof. Papanikolopoulos has received an NSF CPS grant ("CPS: TTP Option: Synergy: Collaborative Research: Dynamic Methods of Traffic Control that Impact Quality of Life in Smart Cities") which totals $784,000 in its first installment. Added 12/20/2013 — Prof. Mihailo Jovanovic received the 2013 George S. Axelby Outstanding Paper Award from the IEEE Control Systems Society for his paper entitled "Coherence in Large-Scale Networks: Dimension-Dependent Limitations of Local Feedback". This prestigious award recognizes the best paper published in the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control during the two calendar years preceding the year of the award. The award was presented during the IEEE CSS Awards Ceremony at the 2013 IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (CDC) in Florence, Italy, Dec 10-13, 2013.

Added 11/18/2009 — Team Minnesota was awarded a Gold Medal at the 2009 International Genetically Engineered Machines competition (iGEM). 120 teams competed from around the world, constructing and testing synthetic biological systems. The June 2, 2009 StarTribune featured the Scout robots developed by Nikos Papanikolopoulos at the University of Minnesota. Added 4/25/2009 — The Rochester Minnesota Youth Computer Training Program came and participated in lab tours and demonstrations at the DTC this spring. The event was a great way to engage high school students about technology degrees and careers, but also an opportunity for faculty, students and staff to show off some the innovative research being done at the DTC. Added 4/19/2009 — DTC Associate Director for Research and Computer Science and Engineering Associate Professor Stergios Roumeliotis was presented with the Guillermo E. Borja Award at the IT precommencement reception on May 8, 2009. Roumeliotis was selected by the IT Promotion and Tenure Advisory Committee from among the candidates for tenure and promotion over a two year period. More on Stergios Roumeliotis

Added 4/15/2009 — Associate Professor Stergios Roumeliotis from the department of Computer Science and Engineering has been named the Associate Director for Research at the Digital Technology Center (DTC). Stergios has been a DTC faculty member since 2002 and has actively participated in DTC research and outreach programs. More on Stergios Roumeliotis

Added 4/8/2009 — EURASIP Best Paper Award for 2004–07: A paper, co-authored by DTC Director Georgios Giannakis, was part of Paul Anghel's MSc Thesis results. Paul went on to complete his PhD under Mos Kaveh. The second co-author is Dr. Zhengdao Wang, now an associate professor at Iowa State University.

Added 1/23/2009 — Silver to Golden Gophers! The first University of Minnesota team to ever participate in the International Genetically Engineered Machines competition (iGEM) was awarded a silver medal in 2008. More on iGEM team

Added 12/4/2008 — DTC faculty member Stergios Roumeliotis has been selected to receive a PECASE award. This is a highly selective honor bestowed upon young faculty in science and engineering. NSF selects only about 20 candidates nationwide each year in the entire field of science and engineering, and there are only about 30 or so NSF PECASE awardees in computer science and engineering since the program started in 1996. Chenjie Gu and Associate Professor Jaijeet Roychowdhury will receive the best paper award at the 13th Asia South Pacific Design Automation Conference which will be held January 21–24, 2008 in Seoul, Korea. The title of the paper is "An Efficient, Fully Nonlinear, Variability-Aware non-Monte-Carlo Yield Estimation Procedure with Applications to SRAM cells and Ring Oscillators."

Added 8/22/2007 — Assistant Professor Yiannis Kaznessis (chemical engineering and materials science) was awarded an NSF CAREER Award for his research on the "Mathematics for Biological Engineering" that provides insight into the dynamic behavior of biological systems.

Added 8/22/2007 — Assistant professor Antonia Zhai and professor Zhi-Li Zhang (computer science and engineering) have received the 2007 IBM Faculty Award. The award is a competitive worldwide program that seeks to build collaborations between researchers at top universities and those in IBM development, research, and service groups.

Added 8/15/2007 — DTC hosts Kids Tech Camp, Aug. 13–17. The third annual University of Minnesota CSE Technology Day Camp is now underway. The camp is a five-day, on-campus program running Aug. 13–17, 2007, aimed at exposing children from underprivileged backgrounds to a collegiate atmosphere and getting them interested in science and technology. Added 3/22/2007 — Famed chimpanzee researcher Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and a UN Messenger of Peace, visited the University of Minnesota campus March 20 to hear about the interdisciplinary work of University ecologists and computer scientists on chimpanzee data through the Jane Goodall Institutes Center for Primate Studies (JGI-CPS). PAUL (3/7/2007) CSE Professor Nikolaos Papanikolopoulos has been named one of the 2007 Distinguished McKnight University Professorship award recipients for his work in, “Robotics and Vision-Based Algorithms — Breaking New Frontiers.” He is one of six 2007 award winners to be honored by this designation and the second CSE recipient. Added 11/20/2006 — Professor Nikolaos Papanikolopoulos, Computer Science and Engineering and DTC, has been awarded the distinction of IEEE fellow, effective January 1, 2007. IEEE honored Papanikolopoulos with the title of fellow for his contributions to robotics and the creation of the Scout robot. He is the sixth CSE faculty member to receive this honor.
