Cognitive Spectrum Operations

BaxleyWith the impending spectral deluge of wireless users, smart — or cognitive — radio frequency (RF) device optimizations are the next frontier of RF systems research. Specifically, we need devices that can intelligently reason about how to best deploy their resources in order to achieve a spectrum objective; be it communicating, jamming, or sensing. One example of this trend is cognitive radio, also known as dynamic spectrum access (DSA) radio. DSA radios use a rudimentary cognition to reason about where and when a certain piece of the spectrum will be available. Armed with this information, a DSA radio adjusts it transmission frequency to operate in the available spectrum, thereby achieving its objective. More sophisticated cognition that seeks to achieve a more dynamic and involved objective is possible. Also, since we would like achieve network-wide capabilities, we must reason across a network of available RF nodes. Finally, with the widespread adoption of software defined radios, each RF node may be able to execute more than one RF modality (sensing, jamming, and/or communicating). These three areas — smarter cognition, multi-node cooperation, and multi-modal nodes — will be the main drivers of advancement for the foreseeable future. This presentation will describe the recent research progress in this area as well as open research problems.

 

Dr. Bob Baxley received his BS, MS, and PhD degrees all in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech. His master's thesis, entitled Analyzing Selected Mapping for Peak-to-Average Power Ratio Reduction in OFDM, won the Georgia Tech university-wide Sigma Xi Award for best MS thesis in 2005. While completing his MS degree, Dr. Baxley received the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) award, which provided full funding for his PhD studies. As a PhD candidate, his research focused on signal processing for communications applications. He was awarded the Grand Prize in the SAIC student paper competition for his work in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform optimization in 2007. Dr. Baxley was also recognized for his PhD research in 2008 with the Georgia Tech Center for Signal & Image Processing Outstanding Research Award. Prior to joining GTRI in 2008, Dr. Baxley acted as an independent consultant for General Dynamics C4 Systems and FutureWei where he helped both companies apply algorithmic power efficiency enhancement technologies to their radio frequency (RF) products. Since joining GTRI, Dr. Baxley has been promoted to the rank of Senior Research Engineer and appointed as Director of the Software Defined Radio Lab. In 2010 he received the GTRI Junior Research Excellence Award. Dr. Baxley is a member of the Association of Old Crows and is a Senior Member of the IEEE. He is an associate editor for Digital Signal Processing.
