Data traffic on wireless networks is experiencing unprecedented and explosive growth fueled by new smart devices and thousands of new applications. At the same time, some fraction of the service provision cost is proportional to the traffic volume. Furthermore, there is a limited choice of technologies that may continue to provide the required increases in system capacity and spectral efficiency. These trends are creating unprecedented challenges for service providers and their equipment vendors. This talk reviews these market trends to frame the need and requirements for next generation wireless technologies. It will then survey the major technology options available with a view to motivate novel research in innovations that are likely to deliver great performance improvements at an affordable cost.

 

Reinaldo A. Valenzuela obtained his B.Sc. at the University of Chile, and his Ph.D. from Imperial College of Sc. and Tech., U. of London, England. At Bell Laboratories, he carried out indoor microwave propagation measurements and developed statistical models. He also worked on packet reservation multiple access for wireless systems and optical WDM networks. He became Manager, Voice Research Dept., at Motorola Codex, involved in the implementation integrated voice and data packet systems. On returning to Bell Laboratories he was involved in propagation measurements and ray tracing propagation prediction. He received the Distinguished Member of Technical Staff award and is Director of the Wireless Communications Research Department. He is currently engaged in MIMO / space time systems achieving high capacities using transmit and receive antenna arrays. He is a Fellow of the IEEE. He has been editor for the IEEE Transactions on Communications and the IEEE Transactions on Wireless. He has published over 130 papers and has 12 patents. He has over 7500 Google Scholar citations and he is a "Highly Cited Author" In Thomson ISI and a Fulbright Senior Specialist. He is the 2010 recipient of the IEEE Eric E. Sumner Award.
