An Application of Fuzzy Logic in Image Processing

Nonlinear filtering techniques, like the median filter, can often be quite effective in removing impulsive noise from imaging. Linear filters do quite poorly in removing impulsive noise. This talk focuses and expands on a 1996 paper by Fabrizio Russo, Fuzzy Filtering of Noisy Sensor Data, IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference, Brussels, Belgium, which describes a set of nonlinear filters that are based on the enabling capabilities of fuzzy logic. A new fuzzy reasoning method, FIRE (Fuzzy Inference Ruled by Else-action) for image processing will be discussed. While the trivial case is more or less identical to the median filtering, the non-trivial case, allows for setting pixel-change level-thresholds for filtering. If a pixel-change is less than the level-threshold no filtering action is initiated, otherwise various degrees of filtering-action are initiated. In practice, this implies that an image filtering method is available for removing impulsive noise, yet retaining the very fine details of an image.

 

Professor Ottesen received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Colorado-Boulder, in 1968. He spent 32 years working for IBM in advanced development of storage systems and retired as a Senior Technical Staff Member in 1994. In the same year, a consulting company Tutorial Technology, Inc. was founded by Professor Ottesen. The company focuses on industrial in-plant consulting and tutorial teaching of digital signal processing and digital control. As of 2001, Professor Ottesen has eighty U.S. patents issued from his work and consulting with IBM. He is currently a professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Minnesota Rochester and an adjunct professor in Biomedical Engineering at the Mayo Graduate School, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota.
