The University of Minnesota has developed a critical mass of faculty, graduate students working in the area of data mining. They are well recognized in the field, have been involved in all major data mining conferences, etc over the last several years, and have been successful at obtaining significant grant funding from federal and state sources. Data mining at the U of Minnesota/DTC currently can be grouped into 5 areas. These include:

  • Core Research in the area of models, algorithms and tools
  • Science and Engineering Applications such as climate modeling, penetration mechanics, and simulation
  • Bio-Medical Applications such as medical informatics, bioinformatics and behavioral ecology
  • Government Applications such as cyber security, transportation and physical security
  • Business Applications such as sales and marketing and automotive
