NSF FASTLANE Submission information

A new version of the NSF Grant Proposal Guide (GPG) (NSF 03-2) is now available. It is effective for proposals submitted on or after October 1, 2002 and supercedes all prior versions of the GPG.

Significant changes include:

Guidance on implementation of Important Notice 127,dated July 8, 2002, entitled, Implementation of new Grant Proposal Guide Requirements Related to the Broader Impacts Criterion. This Important Notice reinforces the importance of addressing both criteria in the preparation and review of proposals submitted to NSF and specifies that, effective October 1, 2002, NSF will return without review proposals that do not separately address both merit review criteria within the Project Summary; new FastLane enhancements for proposal withdrawals and proposal file updates; updated listing of scenarios in which a proposal may be returned without review by NSF.

Effective 6/1/01 the NSF proposals are both signed and sent electronically through Fastlane. PIs do not have to send a signed paper copy to the agency.

Format of the Proposal:

Proposals must have 2.5 cm margins at the top, bottom and on each side. The font size should be no smaller than 10 point.

Sections of the Proposal:

Each Proposal must include the following sections:

The NSF requires the following information to be provided in a Biographical Sketch (limited to two pages):

1. Professional Preparation, including undergraduate, graduate education and postdoctoral training (institution, major, degree & year)
2. Appointments, in reverse chronological order beginning with the current appointment
3. Publications, a list of up to 5 publications, most closely related to the proposed project, and up to 5 other significant publications
4. Synergistic Activities, a list of up to five examples that demonstrate the broader impact of the individual's professional and scholarly activities that focus on the integration and transfer of knowledge as well as its creation. Examples could include, among others: innovations in teaching and training; contributions to the science of learning; development and/or refinement of research tools.
5. Collaborators & Other Affiliations
a. Collaborators and Co-Editors: a list of all collaborators in alphabetical order (including their current org. affiliations) within the 48 months preceding the submission of this proposal, including collaborators on this proposal; a list of all co-editors of a journal, compendium, or conference proceedings during the 24 month preceding the submission of the proposal
b. Own Graduate and Postdoctoral Advisors and their current org. affiliations
c.Total number of graduate students advised and postdoctoral scholars sponsored and a list of names of grads. and postdocs within the last five years, including their current org. affiliations, should be provided.

Current and Pending support information should include the following: source of support, project title, award amount, period covered, location of project, person-month per year committed to the project during calendar, academic year, or summer.
