8/22/07 — Assistant Professor Yiannis Kaznessis (chemical engineering and materials science) was awarded an NSF CAREER Award for his research on the "Mathematics for Biological Engineering" that provides insight into the dynamic behavior of biological systems.

8/22/07 — Assistant professor Antonia Zhai and professor Zhi-Li Zhang (computer science and engineering) have received the 2007 IBM Faculty Award. The award is a competitive worldwide program that seeks to build collaborations between researchers at top universities and those in IBM development, research, and service groups.

8/15/07 — DTC hosts Kids Tech Camp, Aug. 13–17. The third annual University of Minnesota CSE Technology Day Camp is now underway. The camp is a five-day, on-campus program running Aug. 13–17, 2007, aimed at exposing children from underprivileged backgrounds to a collegiate atmosphere and getting them interested in science and technology. 5/4/07 — Data Mining Reception Highlights U of M Cutting-Edge Data Mining Projects: Over 200 researchers and members of industry from around North America attended the University of Minnesota Digital Technology Center's Data Mining Consortium's April 27 poster session and reception that was held in Minneapolis in conjunction with the SIAM 2007 Data Mining Conference. 3/22/07 — Famed chimpanzee researcher Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and a UN Messenger of Peace, visited the University of Minnesota campus March 20 to hear about the interdisciplinary work of University ecologists and computer scientists on chimpanzee data through the Jane Goodall Institutes Center for Primate Studies (JGI-CPS). 3/9/07 — MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (3/7/2007) CSE Professor Nikolaos Papanikolopoulos has been named one of the 2007 Distinguished McKnight University Professorship award recipients for his work in, “Robotics and Vision-Based Algorithms — Breaking New Frontiers.” He is one of six 2007 award winners to be honored by this designation and the second CSE recipient. 3/8/07 — Professor Andrew Odlyzko, director of the Digital Technology Center at the University of Minnesota, refutes the theory that the “fiber glut” of the late 1990s and early 2000s will be exhausted by video, prompting a spike in the price of retail and wholesale bandwith. 12/07/06 — Assistant Professor Tian He, Computer Science and Engineering and DTC, has won two best paper awards. More on Tian He

11/27/06 — ADC Professor Tom Luo, Electrical and Computer Engineering and the DTC, has been awarded the distinction of IEEE fellow, effective January 1, 2007. IEEE honored Luo with the title of fellow for his contributions to modern optimization and its applications in signal processing and digital communications. More on Tom Luo

11/20/06 — Professor Nikolaos Papanikolopoulos, Computer Science and Engineering and DTC, has been awarded the distinction of IEEE fellow, effective January 1, 2007. IEEE honored Papanikolopoulos with the title of fellow for his contributions to robotics and the creation of the Scout robot. He is the sixth CSE faculty member to receive this honor. 10/24/06 — Professor Georgios Giannakis has been selected to serve as an IEEE SPS Distinguished Lecturer for the term 2007 January 1 through 2008 December 31. More on Professor Giannakis

9/29/06 — DISC receives NSF award. The DTC Intelligent Storage Consortium (DISC) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a three year, $600K grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to study critical issues in High Performance Computing and Data Security. More on NSF award

3/3/06 — The journal article “An Efficient Linear-Scaling Ewald Method for Long-Range Electrostatic Interactions in Combined QM/MM Calculation” by DTC researchers K. Nam, Jialia Gao, and Darrin York, was the most accessed article on Journal of Chemical Theory and Computation (JCTC) in 2005. More on journal article

1/30/06 — “Pattern recognition techniques for automatic detection of suspicious-looking anomalies in mammograms” coauthored by Professor David Yuen, Geology and Supercomputing Institute, is ranked number three among the “Top Twenty-Five Hottest Articles on Science Digest.” This paper was funded through the DTC’s 2004–05 Digital Technology Initiative (DTI) program. The consortium comprises nine UMTC colleges and UMD and will be headquartered in the Digital Technology Center. more
