RoumeliotisDTC Associate Director for Research, Professor Stergios Roumeliotis and his team have been developing vision-aided intertial navigation and mapping algorithms for places where GPS is not available (indoors) for Project Tango at Google.

The filtering algorithm currently running on the Google smartphone for computing 3D position and orientation in real-time is based on work the group started over 10 years ago for JPL/NASA-sponsored projects for rover navigation on Mars and autonomous spacecraft landing. This robotics technology is now running on cell phones.

Two of Roumeliotis's former PhD students, Joel Hesch and Esha Nerurkar, are leading the Project Tango technical work at Google/ATAP.
