The information explosion propelled by the advent of online social media, the Internet, and the global-scale communications has rendered statistical learning from massive data increasingly important. At any given time around the globe, large volumes of data are generated by today's ubiquitous communication, imaging, and mobile devices such as cell-phones, surveillance cameras, medical and e-commerce platforms, as well as social-networking sites. Big (Network) Data analytics entail high-dimensional, decentralized, online, and robust statistical signal processing, as well as large, distributed, fault-tolerant, and intelligent systems engineering. Accordingly, there is a need and opportunity for the signal processing community to pursue data-driven research and development. Such an endeavor necessitates training the new cadre of next-generation data science researchers and professionals.

In this context, the technical focus of this summer school is on fundamentals and algorithmic advances for learning from data, with emphasis of network (i.e., graph) data. Topics covered go all the way from learning graph representations of complex signals, to tensor decompositions of multi-aspect data and learning efficient signal representations via state-of-the-art deep learning architectures. To better illustrate the concepts taught, a diverse gamut of application domains will be considered, including communication, social, brain, and power networks, IoT technologies and artificial intelligence.
