> facilities information > networking: general network policies
- All users connected to the DTC network are expected to abide by the
University's Acceptable Use Policy found at:
http://www.fpd.finop.umn.edu/groups/ppd/documents/policy/Acceptable_Use.cfm
- Personal wireless access points, hubs, switches, and NAT'd networks are
not allowed on the DTC network without permission from the DTC technical
support staff.
- It is expected that all computers connected to the network be maintained
with the latest security patches for that particular OS. Any machine that
becomes compromised or causes any problems will be disconnected from the
network.
The Digital Technology Center runs its own DHCP server
to provide network access to laptops in conference rooms and offices. Static
IP addresses will only be given to laptops in special circumstances.
- To register the hardware address of the laptop on the DHCP server,
send e-mail to
help@dtc.umn.edu.
Please specify if you are a visitor to the Digital Technology Center.
- For assistance with locating the hardware address of a laptop, please
refer to the ADCS webpage:
http://www1.umn.edu/adcs/network/hardwareaddress.html
- Hardware addresses not used with DHCP after 120 days may be deleted
from the server.
For Visitors to the University of Minnesota:
Wireless network connections are available in the
conference rooms of the Digital Technology Center. Internet connectivity
is limited to basic services like e-mail, SSH, and web browsing. Users
need to be aware of the insecure nature of wireless connections. Please
remember to take proper precautions and view sensitive material in protocols
such as SSH and SSL. It is recommended that a wired connection via DHCP be
used if there is any concern for security of data. The Digital Technology
Center is not responsible for any computers or information that may become
compromised.
- To register a laptop for wireless, send the hardware address of the
wireless card and the desired username to
help@dtc.umn.edu.
A password will be provided for the web-based authentication system.
Visitors and and seminar speakers can also register in 499.
- Group logins for large conferences can be arranged in advance by
contacting
help@dtc.umn.edu.
A single username and password will be provided for all attendees who
desire network access. This username will expire at the end of the
conference.
- To log into the wireless network, follow these steps:
- Make sure you are connected to the "DTC Wireless" network.
Some network cards will automatically search for all local network and
allow you to select from a list, others will require that you manually
set the SSID to "DTC Wireless".
- Open a web browser and go to any web site. Note: Pop-up windows must be
enabled to maintain network connectivity.
- The web browser will be redirected to a login page. Enter the username
and password that was provided by DTC staff and click the login
button.
- If authentication is successful, the web browser will go to the
original desired web site and a small authentication window will open.
This small window may then be minimized if desired until the user is
ready to logout.
- When ready to logout, go to the small authentication window, and click
logout.
- Please notify
help@dtc.umn.edu
of any problems with the wireless network.
For University of Minnesota Students, Faculty, and
Staff:
The
campus-wide University of Minnesota wireless network is available at
the Digital Technology Center. Use of the University's VPN service to
keep wireless traffic private is recommended. More information on
obtaining the VPN client can be found here:
http://www1.umn.edu/adcs/help/vpn/
A
multi-platform guide about connecting to the U of M wireless can be
found at the following website:
http://www1.umn.edu/adcs/network/
The Digital Technology Center provides wired network
connectivity in all office and conference rooms. It is expected that any
computer connected to the network maintain relatively current versions of
all OS, service, and application security patches. All non-necessary
services such as telnet and ftp should be turned off.
There will be periodic scans of the machines for security problems.
Workstation maintainers are expected to correct the problems that are
identified. Any machines that are compromised or cause problems will be
disconnected from the network.
- To connect a workstation to the network, please e-mail the
desired machine name, OS version, the office network jack to be
activated (i.e. 593 AB), and who will be managing the workstation to
help@dtc.umn.edu.
The DTC staff will then issue the IP address information.
- Any office network ports that are unused for 60 days may be
deactivated.
- Any special networking needs should be directed to
help@dtc.umn.edu.
The AirProjector in Walter 405 allows a Windows
laptop with a wireless ethernet card (802.11b) to connect to the projector
without a wired connection. It works well for presentations and
demonstrations but is not adequate for displaying video.
Using the AirProjector
- Verify that you have an 802.11b wireless ethernet card. If you are able
to connect to the U of M wireless network or the DTC's wireless network,
your card should work fine. The DTC does not have spare wireless cards
available.
- If you need wireless internet access during your presentation or to
download the AirProjector client software in the next step, you will need
a DTC Wireless account. If you do not already have an account, send an
email to
help@dtc.umn.edu
with your email address (or U of M X500 account), and the duration of your
stay.
- Download and install the latest version of the AirProjector Client
software from http://www.komatsu.com/el/lan/ap_download.html#2.
To install the software, open the downloaded file and double-click on
"Setup.exe". An installation wizard will walk you through the
rest of the process.
- Make sure you are connected to the "DTC Wireless" network.
- Double click on the "AirProjector Client" icon. When it has
finished searching for available projectors, click on the projector
labeled "Walter 405" and click the triangular "Play"
button.
- When you're done, click the rectangular "Stop" button.
Any questions or concerns regarding network issues
should be sent to
help@dtc.umn.edu.
