Power Supply to Offices and Laboratories

All power to the offices and laboratories in the Digital Technology Center is backed up by a generator. The power to the offices and laboratories is divided into three categories:

  • orange outlets — computer equipment
  • gray outlets with “essential” written beneath — essential
  • gray outlets without anything written beneath — non-essential

The power for computer equipment is for CPUs and other sensitive equipment. This power has transient surge protection and is exceptionally clean. Essential power is for monitors and other office devices. Non-essential power is for all other devices. Both essential and non-essential power has surge protection and has been conditioned. In case of a power outage where the demand for power exceeds the generator's capacity, power will be shed from the grid in the following order: non-essential first and essential second. It is unlikely that computer equipment would ever be shed from the grid.
