Biplob Kumar Debnath

Advisor(s): David Lilja (lilja@umn.edu)

Degree Plan & Expected Graduation Date

PhD, Fall 2009

Research Interests

Intelligence Storage Systems, Database Systems, Database Performance Tuning

Projects Involved:

  1. New Caching Mechanism for Solid State Disk (SSD): The goal of this project is improve the lifetime and performance of SSD using a new caching mechanism in flash translation layer characteristics.
  2. Object based Storage (OSD) for DBMS: The goal of this project is to leverage OSD for efficient database storage management.
  3. Database Storage Manager for SSD: The goal of this project is to design a storage manager for database to take advantage of SSD's fast read and slow write properties.
  4. Selection of Tuning Parameters of a Database Management System: The goal of this project is to identify database performance bottleneck parameters using design of experiments-based Plackett & Burman methodology.

Vishal Saraswat

Advisor(s):Andrew Odlyzko (odlyzko@math.umn.edu)

Degree Plan & Expected Graduation Date

PhD, May 2009

Research Interests

I am interested in cryptography and information security, algorithm design and analysis, and computational complexity. I am also interested on network security, storage security (especially long term) and protocol security (finding weakness of an existing protocol and enhancing the protocol).

I am currently working on long term key management for for a huge quantity of sensitive data and large number of dynamic users.

Sarah Sharafkandi

Advisor(s): David Du (du@cs.umn.edu)

Degree Plan & Expected Graduation Date

PhD

Research Interests

I am interested in the design of Meta data server. For many applications we need a distributed metadata management in the context of petabyte-scale. My research interest is focused on designing a scalable architecture for Meta data servers so that location tracking, access control, migration, replication etc … can be performed efficiently in large volumes.
